Chak De India is a 2007 Indian sports drama film set in the run-up to India's first FIFA World Cup bid. Directed by Shimit Amin and written by Javed Akhtar, it stars Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Rani Mukerji. It has been critically acclaimed for its story and screenplay. The movie is set in 1979 and tells the story of three brothers: one of Indian origin and two of African descent (a former African prince). They live at their grandfather's house in Bombay while their father is on a business trip abroad; he has left them with instructions to not reveal his whereabouts to anyone outside their family. The brothers' grandfather tells them that all their ancestors on their father's side had made a contribution to the history and culture of India and they must do something new and important as well. The youngest brother, Ranjit, suggests abandoning their love of soccer after seeing his favourite player Balwant Singh "Balwa" injured during the finals of the Inter-Bombay tournament. Their grandfather scolds them for such a suggestion, but later gives them time to think about it. One day, their grandfather gives them one of his own shirts to wear and tells them that one day people will thank them for their contribution to Indian football. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (aka Ranjit) is the eldest of the brothers. He is played by Anil Kapoor, who had previously worked with director Shimit Amin on "Bandit Queen" (1996). Rajiv Narain Solanki (Anil Kapoor) is the second son of a Gujarati family. He plays football for his university team and was on the verge of being selected for India's national team. He is noted for his acrobatic skills, but is best known for his uncanny ability to "jump-ball" the ball to teammates in mid-air. He is played by Akshay Kumar, who had previously worked with director Shimit Amin on "Biwi Ho To Aisi" (1999). Keshav Rai Solanki (Akshay Kumar) is the third son of a Gujarati family. He idolises Ranjit and tries very hard to be his friend, but fails miserably. The rivalry between the two often comes to blows when Keshav tries to take advantage of situations which he knows will work in Ranjit's favour. He was a famous player in a local Bombay team. He is played by Sushant Singh, who had previously worked with director Shimit Amin on "Biwi Ho To Aisi" (1999) as well as the TV series "Yeh Mera India" (2000). Balwant Singh "Balwa" Ojha (Sushant Singh) is a former African prince and the captain of the West African football team. He became an Indian citizen after marrying an Indian woman and also became a successful businessman.
